OpenAI Launches SearchGPT: AI-Powered Search Prototype
OpenAI has announced its much-anticipated entry into the search market SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine that provides real-time access to content throughout the internet.
The search engine opens with a huge textbox that prompts the user. However, rather of giving a simple list of links, SearchGPT attempts to organize and make sense of them. In one example from OpenAI, the search engine summarizes its discoveries on music festivals before providing brief summaries of the events, followed by an attribution link.
For the time being, SearchGPT is only a prototype. According to OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wood, the service is powered by the GPT-4 model family and will initially be available to 10,000 test customers. According to Wood, OpenAI collaborates with third-party companies and builds search results utilizing direct content feeds. The ultimate goal is to integrate the search functionality directly into ChatGPT.
It marks the beginning of what might become a significant threat to Google, which has pushed to include AI elements into its search engine, fearful that customers will flock to other firms that provide the tools first. It also puts OpenAI in direct competition with Perplexity, a firm that calls itself an AI answer engine. Perplexity has lately come under fire for an AI summaries tool that authors complained was blatantly stealing their work.
Will SearchGPT be a threat to Google’s dominance?
It is only the beginning for SearchGPT, but Google has also rushed to implement AI components in its search engines. OpenAI might compete more directly with Perplexity, a startup that labels itself an AI answer engine.
OpenAI SearchGPT Features
OpenAI announced its entry into the search engine industry via a blog post on its website. A prototype of new search features designed to combine the strength of our AI models with information from the web to give you fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources.
According to photos supplied by the AI firm, the SearchGPT interface will have a huge text box and a button to start the search. This will open the search results page, which has a basic interface. Users can view photos, tables, and other graphics related to their query at the top of the page. The material will be presented in the form of paragraphs and bullet points. Users will notice the sources of the information at the bottom, represented by small rectangular tiles.
OpenAI claims that their Search solution intends to solve the problem of finding answers on the web in a single attempt. According to the AI startup, SearchGPT combines its AI models’ conversational capabilities with real-time online data. SearchGPT will also allow users to ask follow-up inquiries as the AI uses past queries to improve and fine-tune results. The corporation does not provide the specifics of the AI model employed in this tool.
Publishers, bloggers, and website owners are concerned about diminishing traffic as AI-powered search engines gain traction. In response to the concerns, OpenAI stated that it collaborated with publishers to develop SearchGPT and is still seeking their comments. It has also claimed to be offering a means for publishers to control how they appear in SearchGPT.
